The Gospel of St. Luke 16:30 tells of a rich man who calls his steward to account for poor

management of his estate. In response, the steward summons his master’s debtors, confirming their debt. Asking each what they owe, he forgives a large part to win their favor before his upcoming dismissal. The steward is praised for his wisdom. Jesus illustrates shrewdness and wise stewardship in the face of uncertainty, reminding us of the dangers of serving two masters: particularly money and God.

Jesus wants His followers to be just, righteous stewards. If we understand the principle that all we own is a gift from God, then we realize that God is the owner of everything and that we are His stewards. We are called to use the Master’s resources to further the Master’s goals.

We, as the people of God, are to be generous and use our gain for the benefit of others.

God of power and justice, you weep over those who wander from you, who turn aside to other gods, and who enter into chaos and destruction. By your tears and through your mercy, teach us your ways and write them on our hearts so that we may follow faithfully the path you show us. Amen
