Ralph Hedley, a woodcarver, realist painter, and illustrator, is best known for his paintings depicting scenes of everyday life in Northeast England. Here, the artist tenderly presents a widow engaged in a quiet moment of introspection. God’s light illuminates the darkness of the church’s interior. Barely visible on the upper left, the lectern remains vacant, and the Bible on it lies closed. The church appears deserted except for an apparent figure in the distant shadows. Light illuminates the space, but cannot penetrate her sorrow. Passages in James, Isaiah, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Zechariah, and Jeremiah are timeless reminders of God’s call to extend love and support to orphans and widows. These verses call us to be the hands and feet of
Jesus in a world that often turns away from the vulnerable, and encourage us to embrace justice, mercy, and care, not just in words but in our daily actions.
God of mercy and healing, you who hear the cries of those in need, receive these petitions of your people that all who are troubled may know peace, comfort, and courage. Amen
